How Etsy profit is calculated
Etsy Profit = Seller Revenue - Etsy Fees - Product Cost - Packaging - Seller Shipping - Advertising - Other Costs.
Seller Revenue = Item Sales + Shipping Charged to Buyer + Gift Wrap. Buyer-paid sales tax is excluded from seller revenue, although it can affect the Etsy Payments processing fee base.
What counts as an Etsy selling cost?
Product cost is entered per item and multiplied by quantity. Packaging, seller-paid shipping, advertising, and other costs are entered as total order costs. This keeps unit costs separate from order-level expenses.
Etsy fees vs seller costs
Etsy fees come from the existing centralized Etsy fee engine: listing fee allocation, transaction fee, and US Etsy Payments processing fee. Seller costs are the amounts you enter for the order, such as materials, packaging, postage, and manually entered advertising costs.
Worked example
Example inputs: selling price $30.00, quantity 1, shipping charged $5.00, gift wrap $0.00, sales tax $0.00, product cost $10.00, packaging $1.00, seller shipping $5.00, advertising $2.00, other costs $0.00, and listing fee included.
- Seller revenue: $35.00
- Etsy fees: $3.78
- Seller costs: $18.00
- Net profit: $13.22
- Profit margin: 37.77%
Understanding Etsy profit margin
Profit Margin = Net Profit / Seller Revenue x 100. This calculator uses seller revenue as the denominator and does not include sales tax in that revenue number.
Why Etsy revenue is not the same as profit
Revenue is the money tied to the sale before fees and seller costs. Profit is what remains after Etsy fees and the costs you entered. A listing can have strong revenue and still lose money if product, shipping, packaging, or advertising costs are too high.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate profit on Etsy?
Start with seller revenue, subtract Etsy fees, then subtract your product cost, packaging, shipping label cost, advertising, and other order-level costs.
What Etsy fees are included in this calculator?
The calculator reuses the Etsy Fee Calculator engine for the US listing fee allocation, Etsy transaction fee, and US Etsy Payments processing fee.
Does shipping charged to the buyer count as revenue?
Yes. Buyer-paid shipping is included in seller revenue because it is part of the order amount received for the sale. Your actual shipping-label cost should be entered separately as seller-paid shipping.
Should I include my shipping-label cost?
Yes, if you want an order-level profit estimate. Enter your shipping-label or carrier cost in the seller-paid shipping field.
Does this calculator include Etsy Offsite Ads?
It does not calculate Offsite Ads automatically. If this order had an Offsite Ads fee, Etsy Ads cost, or other marketing expense, enter that amount manually in the advertising field.
Does sales tax count as Etsy revenue?
No. Sales tax is not counted as seller revenue or profit. It can affect the Etsy Payments processing fee base, matching the fee treatment established in the Etsy Fee Calculator.
Why is my Etsy payout different from my profit?
Payouts reflect Etsy account activity and can include timing, reserves, refunds, shipping labels, ads, and other account charges. Profit also depends on your own product, labor, packaging, advertising, and overhead costs.
What is a good profit margin for an Etsy seller?
There is no universally correct margin. Healthy margins depend on product type, materials, labor, shipping, advertising, overhead, and business model.
